As winter slowly passes on and I dream of another great season of ocean swims, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking of an idea, as one does. Punters can contribute to a blog to finish the following sentence:-
You know you’ve done plenty of ocean swims when ……. Eg ... You know you’ve done plenty of ocean swims when Siberians take out a salt mining lease on your ears.
Over to you ...
John Bamberry
You know you've done plenty of ocean swims when....whenever out in public and you see water, you cant help flailling you arms around in front of your face and tilting your head from side to side.
ReplyDelete...when you wake up in the middle of the night thinking of a daft idea to do with ocean swimming...
ReplyDeleteJust joking (sort of).
But seriously, You know you've done plenty of ocean swims when you plan your summer '09/'10 (yikes!) around the ocean swims calendar.
You know you're Ocean Swimming Tragic (O.S.T.)when ...
ReplyDeleteYou think ocean swimming is a year-round pusuit, 16-degree water temp is "not too bad once you're in", and 2m winter swells are "not too bad once you get out through the break"
You know you're an Ocean Swimming Tragic when ...
ReplyDeleteYou keep all your Race Caps as a kind of proof of your achievements.
And tag each cap with a date and venue, for good measure.
... you think "Google Earth" was developed exclusively for the use of ocean swimmers.
ReplyDeleteTo check up on distances swum in races, and to plan training swims at new beaches.
You know you are an ocean swimming tragic if, whenever you look at a beach, you think: "This beach is crying out for an ocean swim."
ReplyDeleteYou are also a tragic if you try to persuade everyone you meet to try ocean swimming and cannot understand their reluctance to give it a go.

ReplyDeleteI'll tell ya what Bambi,
ReplyDeleteYou know your an oceanswimming trajic when you plan family holidays to coincide with events. Not too bad when you consider such delightful locations as Southwest Rocks, Mollymook or Fiji, just to name a few.
But I'll be buggered if we're ever gonna get back to the snow again now. Unless of course they come up with a mid winter event in them thar mountains.
How about the "Guthega Gift" run over about 1500 centimetres on the pristine reaches of the Island Bend Pondage, with wetsuits of any thickness allowed? That'd sort the punters out from the posers.
Actually you know you have gone just plain mad when you start dreamin up events in improbable places just to justify a holiday there.
Anyway, back to the winter asylum,
David Love.
Davo,
ReplyDeleteThere's a 7k swim across Lake Jindabyne in February next year, I'm thinking about it.
At an altitude 1000m in the Snowy Mountains, I'm not sure it strictly qualifies as an "ocean swim".
But sure, agreed ...
You know you're an ocean swimming tragic ...
when you'd rather have swimming weekend in Jindabyne, than a skiing weekend
You know you are... when you check the Oceanswims website in the middle of winter.
ReplyDeleteYou know you're an ocean swimming tragic when.... you totally understand and can relate to all the other above tragic's (including Richard Murray) and you think his idea of "keeping all your Race Caps as a kind of proof of your achievements. And tagging each cap with a date and venue, for good measure" is just bloody fabulous
